TRAINING

The education of a future professional engineer cum manager is incomplete without the exposure to working in an organization. Summer practical training, therefore, is made an essential academic requirement for the under graduate students. The program comprises two mandatory trainings of one-month duration each at the end of fourth semester and seventh semester. The training provides the student opportunities to

Have a first hand exposure to the functioning of an organization

Relate class room learning of concepts and skills to real life management situations and

Make an informed choice of specialization and career

Assist students in being more receptive to market needs and in deciding their careers and specialization disciplines

The training cell corresponds with different types organizations within and outside the state for procuring the seats. The practical training covers mainly the aspects concerned to Remote Sensing and GIS, Watershed management and evaluation, Agricultural Product Process engineering, Renewable Energy and Rural Management and Farm Power and Machinery. The College has always enjoyed extensive corporate support, with the result that summer trainings have been diverse, challenging and intensely learning experiences. The training also provides students with ample opportunity to add to innovate over and challenge ideas and techniques imbibed in the course work. It also assists student in being more receptive to market needs and in deciding their careers and specialization disciplines. The Training and Placement cell organizes a debriefing secession on practical training after the students return. Necessary remedial measures are also undertaken to supervise the students while the training is on going and for maintaining the standards of the training.

Placement cell

The Placement cell espouses an out of the box approach to business issues enabling the students to interact with prominent entrepreneurs, to access opportunities in entrepreneurship, to share ideas, shape business plans, and develop the skills necessary to lead, build, and innovate. The cell undertakes three major activities: Instituting lecture by corporate leaders and organizing professional and management games and case competitions. Workshops and industry talks are organized through the year, with the twin goals of gaining familiarity with current industry trends and business practices and improving relations with institute corporate partners. The objectives of the placement cell include:

To place the out coming engineers properly by arranging campus interviews after discussion with corporate people

To explore the future possibilities for placing agricultural engineers within and outside the state

To organize lectures on developing professional and entrepreneur skills for the young professional technocrats

Companies are requested to provide well-defined job descriptions. The companies are critical to attracting appropriate candidates by briefing the job profile and future growth in their company. The placement forum appended to the brochure may be used to communicate the job descriptions. In the month of July the students will be required submit their resumes for jobs in companies of their choice. A master copy of the resumes of all outgoing students is prepared in the form of a compilation and is retained with the placement cell for future correspondence. A gist of the resumes is prepared in an uniform format and will be sent to the companies by third week of July for their information and shortlist. The companies should send the short listed candidatures before they are scheduled to visit the institute. The final result has to be handed over to the placement office after selection process is over. This is to ensure that if some candidates selected by the company do not accept the offer, the company will have enough time, if it so wishes, to consider other candidates. Since students usually withdraw from the recruiting process as they get placed in companies of their choice, companies scheduled on later dates usually have a shorter list of candidates available. Therefore companies are advised to keep in touch with the placement cell during recruitment fortnight to get regular updates on the students available for recruitment. This would allow them to modify their shortlist accordingly. Placement cell would help the companies in case of difficulty. The placement cell explored many private and public sector undertaking companies / NGO’s in agricultural sector for employing agricultural engineers. An overview of the placement of agricultural engineers right from the inception of the college is presented in Table 1.

It is a matter of great concern that only two agricultural engineers are employed in the Director of Agriculture, Government of Gujarat so far. In addition to this, there are many government sectors related water management, agricultural product process industries, where agricultural engineers are required to play an important role, but they are not employed due to one or the other reasons. The Placement cell will work hard to open avenues in the above-mentioned remaining sectors of Agriculture. Since its birth the institute has undertaken to develop leaders who with their dreams, aspirations, visions and hopes shape the global economy and drive the growth rate of the organization they serve. Today the alumni head the best companies in India and abroad, testifying the institute’s genius in producing the corporate leaders of tomorrow.

Potential Employers at National and State level

The need for agricultural engineers is increasing day by day because the agriculture is intensified and modified. The agricultural engineers have to play a significant role in increasing the production and productivity. The tremendous role of agricultural engineers in effectively utilizing the precious agricultural inputs as seed, fertilizer, irrigation water, farm implements and machines as well as plant protection equipments can not be denied at this stage. The research carried out by agricultural engineers has significantly benefited the agriculture.

The rate of increase in number of Agricultural Engineering graduates produced was low during the period till 1966. There after the number increased at a faster rate as more number of institutions started the agricultural engineering programmes. At present, the country, produce 273 agricultural engineering graduates each year whereas the estimated demand for such graduates is 1100 per year. Thus, we are short of 827 graduates per year. This is not even 25 per cent of the demand. As far as the employment of agricultural engineers in our country is concerned, the agricultural engineers are playing the important roles in various spheres as listed below:
